2017 is just around the corner. The new year always brings the promise of a fresh start and new possibilities. Here are five things dental assistants can look forward to in 2017.

Meeting New Patients

Many dental assistants say the best part of their jobs is interacting and connecting with patients. A new year means meeting new patients. It’s an opportunity to enhance your communication skills and build relationships with patients, which can enhance their dental experience.

“I love getting to know patients and helping them feel at ease. It’s the best feeling knowing that they feel comfortable and they’re satisfied with their experience.” —Shanice G.

Taking Up a New Hobby

Dental assistants are passionate about their careers! However, for good work-life balance, everyone should carve out some time to pursue other interests. We’ve heard from dental assistants who have a variety of hobbies, such as cooking, listening to music, exercising and more!

“I plan to travel more. I’m going to take an extra day off when the office is closed on weekends and take four-day trips.” —Christopher H.

Strengthening Bonds with Colleagues

Dental offices can be high-stress, fast-paced environments. Many of the dental assistants we’ve talked to said the friendships they build at work are a big part of job satisfaction.

“My co-workers are like my family. I work with a great team, and we get along really well together.” —Kris D.

Learning Something New

Dentistry is an exciting, dynamic field that is always evolving with new technology, techniques and procedures. When a new year begins, many dental assistants get excited about the chance to learn new skills and advance in the profession.

“My new interest that I’m learning so much about is implant dentistry. It’s so rewarding to help patients who desire to have either single tooth restorations or overdentures done after years of going without true functionality. It just makes me smile. And I’m loving all the new technology with implants.” —Christy T.

Celebrating Dental Assistants Recognition Week

Dental assistants always look forward to that special week in March when they get to celebrate their profession. Dental Assistants Recognition Week (DARW) takes place March 5-11, 2017, and dental assistants across the country will celebrate! Visit the American Dental Assistants Association for resources and ideas for celebrating DARW. “As a dental assisting instructor, every year I invite dental assistant students for a luncheon and have a guest speaker. We celebrate with door prizes and a cake I bake for them.” —Julie O.
