Are you planning to take (and hopefully pass!) DANB exams in the new year?

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to take a DANB exam? Well, wonder no more! If you’ve got questions about test day, we’ve got answers.

As you may know, you can apply for all national DANB exams online. After your application is processed and approved, you will receive an email notifying you that you can log in to your DANB account to schedule your exam. All DANB exams are taken in person, on a computer at Pearson VUE testing centers, which are located across the country.

Here, we provide a step-by-step outline of what will occur at the testing center so that you’ll be prepared — and can focus on acing the DANB exam!

Getting to the Test Center

First things first — you’ll need to get to the test center. Before DANB exam day, it’s a good idea to look up the route to the testing center and maybe even practice driving to the test center before the big day so that you will know exactly how to get there and where you can park.

On DANB exam day, be sure to leave enough time for your drive and possible traffic. Doing this will help you feel less stressed and will help ensure that you’ll be on time. You’ll want to arrive at least 30 minutes early to the Pearson VUE testing center. This way, you’ll have enough time to complete the check-in process.

Checking In

When you arrive at the testing center, you’ll need to sign in and show your government-issued ID. You should also be aware that test centers may take your photo and a palm scan to verify your identity. These steps are done to ensure that the exam is secure.

Next, you’ll be provided with a locker, where you can store and lock any personal items that aren’t allowed in the testing room. These items may include food and beverages, wallets and bags, cellphones and other electronics, and reading or study materials.

After you’ve stored your personal items, you’ll wait to enter the exam room. While you wait, please note that you won’t be permitted to do any last-minute studying. No family members, friends or other visitors will be allowed in the test center area or building during this time.

Taking the DANB Exam

After you check in, an exam proctor will show you to the exam room. They will provide you with a note board and marker for note-taking. They will also review the exam room rules with you and then walk you to a computer station. There, you will receive a short tutorial on how to navigate the exam. The tutorial is not part of the test and will not count toward your exam time. After you complete the tutorial, you’ll begin to take the DANB exam on a computer. The amount of time you have to complete the exam depends on the exam you are taking. See the DANB exam application packet for details.

Taking an Exam Break

While taking the DANB exam there are no breaks, but you may be excused to visit the restroom one at a time. You are not allowed to leave the building during the test. If you need to take a bathroom break, raise your hand and the proctor will walk you out of the exam room. However, the clock will not stop during your break, so you should be mindful of the time.

After your break, the proctor will once again verify your identity and confirm that you’re not bringing any prohibited items into the room.

Completing the Exam

When you complete the exam, raise your hand to indicate to the exam proctor that you’ve finished. Once you leave the exam room, you’ll receive exam-completion confirmation paperwork from Pearson VUE, along with your preliminary results. You can expect DANB to mail the official exam results and any earned certificates within two to three weeks after the exam.
